Poor Alfred Dreyfus was found guilty of treason, without proof and was exiled to Devil’s Island, in front of the coast of Guiana, a terribly isolated island used as a French penal colony.īefore being exiled he was publicly degraded, in the presence of 4000 soldiers and 20.000 civilian spectators. Later it turned out that the secret proof was absolutely not real. The proof is so “secret” that the Army could not reveal what it was. New “secret” proof against Dreyfus was produced during the trial. When his case came to court, he and his lawyers were sure he would be found not guilty, as there was absolutely no proof against Dreyfus.īut the prosecution sided with the French Ministry of War. He remained in prison, and an anti-semitic newspaper started to write about the case, accusing Dreyfus and blowing the case to the public, making it mediatized and famous. They said Dreyfus wrote differently, or used a different hand or style of writing, on purpose. The French army didn’t want to admit they caught the wrong man. The handwriting of Dreyfus was not similar to the handwriting in the letter. He was left alone in a room with a charged pistol so he could kill himself and avoid public shame, but he didn’t shoot himself. Nationalism was rising with an anti-semitism feeling, they went hand in hand.ĭreyfus was arrested, questioned and accused of espionage. It is known that Antisemistism happens in cycles in France.ĭreyfus was unlucky, as, since the end of the Franco-Prussian war and the loss of the region the Alsace, there was a general antisemitic idea growing in France: “The Jews were responsible for this disaster” It turned out to be a handwritten, anonymous letter of a French officer in which he promised he would transfer French confidential military documents to a foreign nation.ĭreyfus, being Jewish, was the perfect criminal. In 1894, the cleaning women of the German Embassy in Paris, emptied a garbage can in the offices and discovered a torn letter.Īs she was a spy for the French Counter Intelligence, she brought the letter to her superiors who glued the pieces of letter together. He died in 1935, at the age of 75 and was buried in Paris at the Montparnasse cemetery.ĭuring WW II, his wife, being Jewish, had to hide in the South of France and died shortly after the end of the war. In 1906 he was officially rehabilitated and joined the French army again.ĭuring WW 1, he fought in the French artillery. When he was finally released in 1899, he recuperated in the south of France. The Dreyfus Affair started in 1894 and sent Dreyfus as a prisoner to Devils island for several years. When he was 31, he married the 20 year old Lucie and they had two children, a boy and a girl. Shortly after he started his military career, he joined the artillery where he was ranked Captain in 1889, the year the Eiffel Tower was inaugurated.Ī few years later he joined the Army Headquarters, where in theory he had access to secret documents. He was accepted into the prestigious military officers school founded by Napoleon Bonaparte, “ L’Ecole Polytechnique” and the school of artillery. The French lost the war and also lost the region the Alsace to the Germans.ĭreyfus’ family, like many other Jewish French families there, did not want to become German and moved to Paris.Īfter high school, Alfred Dreyfus joined the army. In 1870 a war began between France and Prussia ( Germany today ). His father, like many traditional Jews of Alsace, had a textile company. Let’s find out what happened exactly, who Dreyfus was and what effect “the Affair “had on France, then and today.Īlfred Dreyfus was born in 1859 in the city of Mulhouse, in a region east of France, called the Alsace. The term intellectuals was used for the first time ever in the late 1800-s to designate the writers, scientists, politicians, journalists who supported Dreyfus by believing he was not guilty. Intellectuals! We all know what Intellectuals means… but did you know that this word was tightly linked with the famous Dreyfus-affair? In the footsteps of the Alfred Dreyfus Affair

On a gaming rig with a steady 35 Mbps wireless signal, the game was still often fuzzy and jerky, particularly during chaotic action sequences. Likewise, the music is eerie and the voice acting is all on point.īut my experience of actually playing Gylt was, without mincing words, miserable. The graphics would have been more memorable if they'd leaned into the cartoonish aesthetic more, but they're on the right track, at least. The art style goes for sort of a Coraline-ish "slightly askew schoolgirl in a very askew mirror world" aesthetic, and it works. Normally, I'd take a moment here to address the graphics, music and voice acting, but frankly, they're all fine. I hunted down almost every optional journal, and I was still left scratching my head as to what Sally did that was so unforgivable - and what makes Emily such a perfect, blameless martyr. Gylt puts normal childhood behavior under extremely harsh scrutiny, but doesn't provide enough details to flesh out the characters and their motivations. But the text doesn't back up the subtext. The trouble with Gylt is that it thinks it's making a very important point: that we often rail against bullies, even as we bully others ourselves. Google Stadia: Which Gaming Service Will Win? Sally's punishment is disproportionate to her crime, particularly if you don't hunt down every collectable doodad and have to suffer through the "bad" ending. And in an 11-year-old, that's eminently forgivable - even if the story doesn't seem to think so. Without spoiling too much of the story, we do eventually learn why Sally didn't stand up for her cousin, but it's not some deep-seated darkness within the protagonist. Why was Emily bullied? Why was Sally her only lifeline? What about Sally's own bullies? (After the intro, they're never mentioned again.) Why was protecting Emily against bullies Sally's - and only Sally's - responsibility? The problem with Gylt is that its story has grand pretensions and a solid metaphor - our indifference makes us monsters - but the execution is incredibly vague.īut if you take a closer look at the plot threads, things start to fall apart. That keeps the story moving forward, as Sally tries to persuade a reluctant Emily to come home, and Emily starts to understand the threat she faces by staying in the otherworld. Bullies made fun of Emily relentlessly, and Sally never stood up for her. It sets the mood for a dark, traumatic, deeply psychological story about children who seem so cruel, they manifest as literal monsters.Īs the game progresses, we learn more about Emily's self-imposed exile through journals scattered around the school. When you first boot up Gylt (and thanks to Stadia, you can boot it up as soon as you buy it - there's no installation), you'll see a disclaimer that the game deals with the sensitive topic of childhood bullying, and that you should seek help from a professional if it's happened to you. Gylt's gameplay isn't deep, but it's good enough to keep you moving through the story - which is also a mixed bag. This heightens the tension, but severely limits your gameplay options, which feels like an anticlimactic way to end. In fact, late in the game, you won't have access to a few of your tools at all. Since Sally's skills don't change over the course of the game, the puzzles you'll solve toward the beginning of the game aren't that different from those you'll solve at the end. Google Stadia: Which Gaming Service Will Win Then, you're going to solve a very elaborate puzzle or fight a boss to find a way out of the building, and repeat the whole process again. Then, you're going to traverse a long corridor that's filled with enemies, which you'll need to evade since they're too numerous to fight. You know that you're going to explore every room in a building, fighting or evading a few foes along the way. Once you understand all the tools in your arsenal, the game can get pretty repetitive. While Gylt's gameplay variety works in its favor early on, it can't help but feel a little constricting as the game progresses. The problem is that, in doing so, there is a chance that reality will end the cool memory they have in FPS, because they don't know how it got saturated. This news even made some players feel like picking up the box on the shelf and installing the 300 CDs of "Battlefield 2," an extremely entertaining game where people spent hours and hours training the sniper-like sight on bots while hiding on top of a building. There is a good option for those who want to learn a little about the subject or who simply wants to have fun exchanging shots on a map with 8 km² in "Battlefield 2." Therefore, those who experience the modification can revive that war with weapons, equipment, uniforms and vehicles accurately portrayed. Project Reality (PR) is a modification for the retail Battlefield 2 multi-player PC game. In addition to several improvements made to the game and some maps added, one of the highlights of the update is the attempt to recreate the Falklands War in "Battlefield 2." It is a conflict that occurred in 1982 and put Argentines and British in a dispute over the islands in the South Atlantic that in English Are known as Falkland. However, in recent days those responsible for it have released a new version for "Battlefield 2" itself. Originally released in 2005, this mod gained such strength that it even received versions for Weapon 2 and 3, as well as a spiritual successor named Squad. Comments Project Reality is an ambitious. Part of this is due to changes made to the game and one of them is called Project Reality. Battlefield 2 Project Reality mod adds the Falklands War By Joe Donnelly published 28 November 2016 V1.4 adds reworked tanks and jets, and three new maps. That's more than 10 years since Electronic Arts launched "Battlefield 2," but despite several other titles having replaced it as the company's top FPS, there are still plenty of people who continue to revel in the online games they offer. |
